There was a cut across Fitz’ forehead and temple, beside a slab of pavement pushed up by weeds and roots. I dropped to my knees beside him and reached for his head, but Gabe held a hand up.
“Don’t move his head. We don’t know the damage yet.” He felt carefully beneath Fitz’ neck, eyes unfocused. After a moment he let out a breath. “I don’t think his neck is broken. He’s alive, but unconscious. A concussion, maybe. Damn it. What are in the packs?”
I did a quick mental inventory. “Tents, ropes, some food and water—”
“Water,” Gabe said, “and one of the tents, we’ll use it to wrap the wound.”
I dug through the pack and spared a look for Fenrir. Ronan hadn’t returned yet, and the great wolf had occupied himself snuffling at the chimera’s corpse. If he even noticed the presence of Gabe, Fergus, and Fitz, it wasn’t obvious. Relief washed through me. It was one less thing to worry about right now.
When I’d retrieved one of the collapsed tents and a bottle of water, I went back to Fitz and passed the materials to Gabe. Once strips of the canvas were cut, I held Fitz’ head while Gabe cleaned the wound and wrapped it. I wanted to run my hands through his hair, to coax him awake, but I didn’t know how badly he was hurt. So I had to just hope and not let myself cry. Crying wouldn’t help Fitz and it would only distract Gabe.
By the time we’d finished, Fitz’ eyelids fluttered unevenly, and he tried to reach for me. “Wha…?”
“Shh,” I breathed, and took his hand to kiss his fingers. “You’re okay. Just stay still, all right?”
“He can’t,” Gabe said. “We’ve got to move. There’s more than the chimera out here and worse. Fergus, can you get us—”
“No good, brother,” Fergus grunted. He stood nearby, slowly cutting strips of canvas for his own wounds. “I can’t jump myself across this road in this condition. We’re on foot from here. Never mind the trouble it’ll take to carry four of you. Five, counting Fido there.”
Fitz pushed at the ground. “I can walk.” He couldn’t hold his balance, though, and I caught him as he toppled. I was thankful for all the muscles I’d built up, otherwise he would have toppled me. And while I’d imagined myself underneath him, I’d imagined a very different scenario.
“Stay still,” I said. “He can’t walk like this, I don’t even know if we should move him. How are we supposed to…”
I caught sight of Fenrir in the corner of my eye as he tore a chunk from the chimera and began to chew. He was big—as large as a horse, and strong.
Gabe leaned toward me to get my attention. “No. Absolutely not.”
I waved at Fenrir helplessly. “It’s that, or your carry him on your back. I can’t carry him, and Fergus is injured, too.”
Gabe grunted, and watched as Fenrir took another bite of the chimera.
“I told you before,” I said, “he’s different without Loki’s influence.
